The population was 3.8 million. Half of them lived in the major cities, most of which were born in Australia with the majority of them of English, Scottish and Irish descent. It was formed as a democracy with progressive ideas of human rights and ensured that democratic procedures such as the value of a secret ballot were enshrined in its political system. Today, Australia is one of the most dynamic societies of the world. While over 200 languages are spoken, English is the common language of the country.
